How to choose

A guide for discerning men

"Most men spend more time choosing a hotel than choosing what they wear at the pool. The difference in outcome is just as significant."

Why swimwear quality varies so much

Swimwear is one of the few garments worn in extreme conditions — salt water, chlorine, intense UV, repeated stretching — often for hours at a time. The difference between a well-made piece and a cheap one shows faster here than almost anywhere else in a wardrobe.

The gap between mass-market swimwear and genuinely premium swimwear comes down to four things: fabric quality, construction, fit, and how the brand approaches design. Understanding each one makes the decision straightforward.

1. Fabric — where it starts and ends

The single most important factor. Look for Italian-milled nylon — a material that offers superior chlorine and UV resistance compared to standard polyester blends. Premium nylon holds its structure and colour significantly longer — a piece made from quality fabric should look and feel the same after a hundred wears as it did the first time you put it on.

Avoid swimwear that doesn't specify its fabric composition. Brands that use quality materials will always tell you exactly what they are.

"The right piece should look and feel exactly the same after a hundred wears as it did the first time you put it on."

2. Construction — what you can't always see

Check the seams. Premium swimwear uses flatlock stitching — seams that lie flat against the skin rather than creating raised ridges that can chafe or irritate over time. The waistband should feel substantial without being stiff, with consistent tension across its full length.

Hold the fabric up to the light. A quality piece will be opaque and consistent throughout. Any thinning at the stretch points is a sign of inferior construction.

3. Fit — the detail most brands get wrong

Premium swimwear is cut to fit the body in motion — in the water, not just standing still. The brief or trunk should sit securely without pulling, shifting, or loosening when wet. A well-constructed waistband won't roll or stretch out of shape.

If you're between sizes, size up. Premium swimwear is designed with precise measurements — a piece that fits correctly should feel secure but never restrictive.

4. What to look for in a brand

  • 01Fabric transparency — They name the material and explain where it comes from.
  • 02Design lead time — Premium brands design seasons in advance, not to chase trends.
  • 03Considered sizing — A detailed size guide with actual measurements, not just S/M/L/XL.
  • 04Limited collections — Fewer pieces, more attention to each one.
  • 05Care instructions — A brand that cares about longevity will tell you exactly how to maintain the garment.

How RESQMÉ STUDIO approaches this

RESQMÉ STUDIO is a Sydney-based premium men's swimwear label, founded in 2019. Every collection is produced using premium Italian-milled fabric — finished to European standards, chlorine and UV resistant, designed to last across seasons, not just one. Select pieces are produced in ECONYL® regenerated nylon, noted on each product page.

We design a year in advance. Not to anticipate trends, but to give each piece the development time it deserves. The result is swimwear worn by men in Sydney, New York, Mykonos, Sitges, Miami, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Rio — men who treat what they wear as carefully as everything else in their lives.
